Late one Oxford night Daniel P Dykes set about creating a fashion publication that would go someway to being an arbiter on fashion as it appeals to the emerging power generations: those who don't remember a world without the Internet and for whom work plays second fiddle to pleasure. And so Fashionising.com was born as a publication for those who were focussed not just on fashion's trends, but on society's too, and how those trends could all go to heighten the art of living. Hence, Daniel sees a future where, for those young at heart, both fashion and style are grounded in traditional quality, but with a youthful, sensualised edge. Daniel is Fashionising.com's Editor in Chief and Chairman.

Sicilian romance and adventure

Last we checked in on Catrinel Menghia she was partaking in a European adventure through Italy’s rustic fishing villages, high heels on cobbled streets and classic curves catching the eye of locals. That was in issue 6 of Bambi magazine, and now the romance continues in issue 7 with Part 2 of A Sicilian Adventure, photographed by Michel Perez.
These scenes aren’t just visually beautiful, they’re the kind that draw you in – and away. There’s a stirring of desire in the viewer to be on that open balcony, basking in the morning sun and the soft Mediterranean breeze; to be picking ripe juicy oranges with bare feet on cool grass; to experience the romance of those places even if it means packing one’s suitcase and skipping on a plane right now.

And for readers currently being drawn towards a cold winter, isn’t that allure of sun particularly strong for you?

Some people's wardrobes are about a small selection of pieces that all fit within one aesthetic - Tania Braukamper isn't such a person. With a wardrobe that spans three different rooms, her approach to fashion is a mixture of current-season key pieces mixed with vintage finds she's sourced on innumerous shopping trips around the world's more cultured capitals. Despite a disparate approach to shopping, Tania is adamant that the key to mixing vintage with new season is to stick to key looks and colours that work for oneself. And it's a theory that she works into her writing for Fashionising.com, where she serves as the publication's Editor.

Cowgirls-gone-wild: PPQ

Powder puff pink, palest mint green, faded peach – the first few looks out on the PPQ spring 2012 catwalk made us sit up and wonder where the label’s usual don’t-mess-with-me attitude had gone. Well, it hadn’t disappeared entirely; the super short hems on those dresses still provided sass in spades. Nonetheless, design team Amy Molyneaux and Percy Parker’s favourite colour soon showed up and dominated the rest of the show.
All in black, a model in skinny jeans and matching tucked-in shirt, topped off with a Wild West villain’s hat and eye mask was the most literal translation of the designers’ cowgirl-tomboy riff. Naturally it followed that blue denim featured heavily, again doubled up in shirt and jean combinations and often with candy-coloured pops of embroidery. Black denim was liberally scattered with gold PPQ crests and buckles, and more hardware came in the form of costume jewels and hefty accessories. According to the notes these were ‘inheritance pieces to be’ to which the show’s title, Heirloom Blues, referred.

Maybe this was a clever bit of signposting (Molyneaux and Parker have indicated that jewellery is the next step for their brand) but it didn’t feel contrived: a leather harness set with bright chunky crystals was the epitome of the season’s pop art cowgirl-gone-wild.

Sass & Bide bring summer 2012 to London fashion week

From Australia with love we have the fab duo Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton that is Sass and Bide and their breathtaking spring 2012 collection at London fashion week.
As first impressions go it’s safe to say that aliens could’ve landed and we wouldn’t have batted an eyelid. A melange of colours flew down the catwalk with textures, prints and silhouettes to die for. We saw a refreshed version of the colour blocking trend being carried over into next Summer with added spice. In terms of colours, there is no second-guessing that this brand has it all figured out. As far as the spring 2012 colour trends go it is all about the fresh side of a palette; here we see shades of navy, neon yellow, tangerine, Hawaiian lime and some bright teal all fused together into a wearable collection.

Amidst the busy playground of tribal prints and over-sized polka dots, what caught our eye the most was the mixture of fabrics and shapes; a metallic leather skirt in futuristic blue, paired with a plain clashing tee makes for a summer evening soiree. Where as an origami-esque piece which was teamed with a bead encrusted cropped vest is what holidays are made of. The catwalk was effortlessly styled by Wonderland’s fashion director Julia Sarr-Jamois, and with this knowledge is safe to assume that the woman knows her stuff!
The brand has made its mark in the industry for being an easy-to-wear and chic option for any woman. Bringing a sophisticated approach to the trends laid out for next summer it’s no doubt that Sass and Bide has evolved and will continue to bring us what is no less than an ovation worthy show, and season.

Levitating models in Harper’s Bazaar, 1965

While we’ve all likely encountered the daily levitation portraits of Natsumi Hayashi – such is the viral nature of the Internet – you might also recall that such concepts were not uncommon back in the 1960s. Remember the girl in the bubble?
Well here’s another original levitation photo concept courtesy of Harper’s Bazaar, 1965. Titled simply Fly it was also photographed by Melvin Sokolsky.

Timeless futurism from Jean Pierre Braganza

With a name like ‘Praxis’, it came as no surprise that Canadian designer Jean-Pierre Braganza’s collection was an almost scientific dissection of traditionally male tailoring. Shoulders were padded into sharp points, and dresses were made out of reconstructed suit jackets. The soft greys, beiges and dramatic monochrome palettes were broken up with splashes of bright coral pink. A series of striking digital red and black prints ended the show in floorlength dresses and silk shirts.
It was both futuristic and timeless, as we have come to expect from the young designer who has been showing at London Fashion Week since 2008. But the show demonstrated that key Braganza trait perfectly, too: a seamless blending of tough-girl style and a delicate appreciation of the female form.

Youth and the city: DKNY

It didn’t take complex props or the expensive interior of a key city location for DKNY to perfectly convey the mood of their spring 2012 collection. All that was done by way of a sidewalk and a parked taxi; proof, if ever there was any, that getting a show setting right doesn’t necessarily require a huge budget.
But what does a sidewalk and a taxi convey, exactly? It could say many things but in this case the message was unambiguous and strong. As a backdrop to the DKNY-clad models, it meant youthful city chic.

There’s no room for restrictive pencil skirts or fussy hairstyles in DKNY’s youthful world. This girl may be young but her social life keeps her busy, so she wants to be able to change outfits while the taxi meter is still running. Skirts that flow (but naturally sit shorter at the front) or effortlessly skim the thigh are in order. Jackets are unbuttoned, sleeves on relaxed tops are carelessly a little too long, and prints are bold and flirtatious. And there’s one thing that caps off and seals in this DKNY girl’s penchant for understated city glamour: a big, floppy hat.

So Lindsey, so chic

Only a street style queen could pick out the creme of the crop. Especially when it comes down to New York City during New York fashion week.
When model Lindsey Wixson isn’t performing her mainstream runway duties, she continues the style saga on the street, as seen in this cute, French-inspired do. The upper-torso shot is enough to justify her chic personal style. The pastel beret, nautical striped top and soft pink make-up. The entire ensemble is working wonders for her in this summer-into-fall transformation.

And of course, the street style queen we’re referring to is Hanneli Mustaparta, who snapped this photo for her personal site.
Shitika Anand is a freelance journalist, based in Sydney, who is addicted to coffee, vintage boutiques, bright-glitzy earrings and British stand-up comedy. Her bank account weeps every time she walks out of a shoe shop, but her shoe rack throws a 'welcome home' party for the new member. Her undying love for words is obvious when she narrates her entire life story to a stranger on the train. Which is partly the reason she's resorted to writing. When not blogging, she can be found in a corner of her nearest bookshop, hiding under a monstrous pile of international fashion magazines. You can read more of her work on her personal site, Sweet Dreams in my world.

Sasha Pivovarova joins the white set

The notion of ‘just change it’ when picking a new hair colour remains just as relevant as we approach the final quarter of 2011 as it did when the year kicked off. Seemingly channeling Madonna, Russian model Sasha Pivovarova joins the white blonde set in her outing on Vogue Paris’ October 2011 cover.

Photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, Sasha Pivovarova is wearing Versace on her Vogue Paris cover.

The silver-sandaled modern Goddess: Lyn Devon

There’s a sporty femininity to Lyn Devon’s spring 2012 collection. But it’s far from the rough-and-tumble boyish style of sporty we saw in seasons past. Devon’s girl skips in on silver-sandaled feet, as light footed yet inwardly strong as an Ancient Greek deity. She’s like a modern Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt, only in this lifetime she’s trading her bow and arrow for a picnic basket.
Every outfit in the collection is worth a look, be it a simple one-coloured dress with slight cutaway detailing at the sides, or the ankle length dresses that are split open at the sides revealing an under layer (these latter styles will be particularly popular come spring). But it’s also a collection where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The colour palette, the styles, the minimalist silver accessories that compliment every single look, all work together into one understated yet impressive whole of a collection.

And Devon’s collection just goes to show: a gladiator sandal doesn’t have to be fierce. Do look out for pairs that are simple, sporty, and light. Some people's wardrobes are about a small selection of pieces that all fit within one aesthetic - Tania Braukamper isn't such a person. Vogue’s publisher to open fashion school

I can understand why they’d want to, but the broader question is whether having a publishing company move into education is actually good for the industry? Does it risk making fashion even more of a production line and chance stifling creativity?

The publisher of Vogue magazine, Conde Nast, is to open a college of fashion and design in London.

The college will open next September and the principal will be magazine editor Susie Forbes.

It is the first step in to the education market for the international publishers.

The company says it will offer a year-long Vogue fashion foundation course, as well as short courses. It also plans interior design and decoration courses.
